Chemical exfoliation sounds intense, but it's often gentler and more even than scrubbing. Glycolic acid — an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) — works by dissolving the 'glue' between dead surface cells so they shed evenly, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath.

Glycolic is the smallest AHA molecule, which lets it penetrate more efficiently than larger acids — great for results, but it also means you should ease in. A low-percentage daily toner or a couple of nights a week is plenty to start. Overdoing acids is the fastest way to a damaged barrier.
