Glycolic Acid: The Exfoliating Acid With Decades of Proof

Glycolic Acid: The Exfoliating Acid With Decades of Proof

โšก The 30-Second Version

  • โœ“Proven, not trendy: 76% of glycolic acid users improved photodamage in a double-blind trial (vs 40% on placebo).
  • โœ“Start low and slow โ€” a mild toner or pads 2โ€“3 nights a week is plenty; over-exfoliating wrecks your barrier.
  • โœ“Never combine with retinoids the same night, and wear SPF daily โ€” acids make skin sun-sensitive.

Chemical exfoliation sounds intense, but it's often gentler and more even than scrubbing. Glycolic acid โ€” an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) โ€” works by dissolving the 'glue' between dead surface cells so they shed evenly, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath.

This isn't new or unproven. In a double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial, 76% of people using an 8% glycolic acid cream saw at least one grade of improvement in photodamage, versus 40% on placebo. Longer-term AHA use has been linked to increased dermal collagen in photoaged skin.

Glycolic is the smallest AHA molecule, which lets it penetrate more efficiently than larger acids โ€” great for results, but it also means you should ease in. A low-percentage daily toner or a couple of nights a week is plenty to start. Overdoing acids is the fastest way to a damaged barrier.

Two rules: never combine strong acids with a retinoid on the same night, and always wear sunscreen โ€” freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive. If you prefer a no-fuss format, swipe-on exfoliating pads deliver a measured dose without guesswork.
