In this specific case, the underlying mechanism actually does have published clinical research behind it — the question is exactly what that research does and doesn't cover.

What a spicule actually is

Applied to skin, they're designed to create temporary, painless microchannels through the very outer layer of skin (the stratum corneum), the same barrier that normally blocks most topical ingredients from penetrating deeper.
